Afraid of Roofing Scams? Here’s How to Choose a Qualified Roofer

A quick Google search reveals hundreds of options for homeowners in need of a new roof or roof repairs in Dallas. HUNDREDS!! And that’s just from Google. It’s safe to assume that thoroughly vetting a qualified roofer can seem like a part-time job.

As a homeowner, you don’t want to choose just anyone to work on your home. After all, we’ve all heard the stories of shoddy workmanship, stolen money, etc. from storm chasers and non-local roofing companies.

To help make your job easier, we’ve put together a list of the top five most important things to look for when choosing a roofer! Number four on the list may surprise you!

1. Get Local Referrals

You’re less likely to be scammed or have issues when working with someone local to the community. Local contractors are familiar with the local rules and code regulations. They’re more likely to have relationships with the crew and suppliers in the area. If you can’t get a local referral, check out our reviews to verify us!

2. Look For Manufacturer Designations

A manufacturer designation is considered an honor because contractors must pass specific minimum requirements to be factory certified. At Renown, we are committed to providing the best materials, so we partnered with GAF. At GAF, they only allow 2% of roofing contractors per market to be recognized as Master Elite Contractors. We are a part of that 2%.  We are Master Elite Contractors, among other designations. Check out our certifications here

3. Check Better Business Bureau Ratings

Check contractors on the BBB website and check their scores. Sometimes contractors will come by right after a storm, and the BBB is a way to verify who is legitimate. It’s best to steer clear of contractors if they do not exist on BBB.org. Check out our A+ rating on BBB here!

4. License Check?

It may surprise most homeowners that Texas does NOT require contractors to be licensed. Yep, you read that right. Anyone who wants to be a contractor or a roofer can – and they don’t have to pass any sort of training or provide documentation on experience.

Scary, right?!

To give our customers peace of mind, we went above and beyond and did it anyway. Learn more about our certifications and commitment to continuing education here.

5. Make Sure You’ve Got Options

A contractor who doesn’t offer you different shingle options is not working in your best interest. The style and color of the shingles will directly affect your home and its value, so it’s crucial to pick the right ones for your home. That is why at Renown, we provide options from the best such as James Hardie, CertainTeed, and GAF. Our options include asphalt shingles, metal roofing, stone coated steel shingles, and more.

Armed with these five tips, you’ll be able to hire a reliable contractor that can provide you with the best materials and warranties available.
