When most homeowners think of “wind damage” they picture fallen power lines, uprooted trees and other debris after a storm. You may be surprised that high winds can damage your roof, even if you can’t see missing shingles.
One of the reasons wind is so damaging to a roof is because high winds do not hit the roof’s surface evenly. Usually, damage starts at a corner or edge. High winds can get under the shingle and lift it. When this happens, the sealant underneath the shingle breaks and opens your roof up to leaks. High winds also create a vacuum effect and loosen the nails. Over time, it can cause the shingle to curl, split, or even crack.
Once any shingle is loose, it creates a chain reaction and allows wind to lift and damage other shingles. Over time, this can damage your entire roof.
What Wind Speeds Do You Need to Be Worried About?
45 – 57 mph
According to the National Weather Service, slight damage can begin when winds reach 45 mph. While not categorized as “severe,” winds at this speed can cause tree branches to break off and can damage to already loose or susceptible shingles.
58 – 74 mph
Wind at this speed can cause significant damage to landscaping and structures. At this range, the wind will take down whole tree limbs, begin to uproot trees, rip off shingles in good condition and cause issues with chimneys.
75+ mph
At this speed, the wind will cause widespread damage to trees and cause significant roof damage to commercial buildings and homes.
Signs of Wind Damage
Depending on the duration and severity of the storm, you may see immediate damage to your roof or none at all. If your home has been hit by high winds greater than 45 MPH, it is best to get a professional roof inspection to look for loose or curling shingles. Other signs of damage include:
- Granular loss – usually seen gutters or driveway of a home
- Missing shingles
- Uneven roof texture – look for bubbling or curling areas
- Roof leaks or indoor signs of damage
